Situated on South Bridge Road in Singapore, Sai Gim Tong Temple is also referred to as the “South Bridge Road Goddess of Mercy Temple.” It is a traditional Chinese temple that holds deep meaning for the local Chinese population. Many believe that paying homage to Guanyin here will bring good luck and blessings. The temple has stood at this location since its construction in 1884 and was renovated and expanded in 1895.

One of the reasons this temple continues to attract a steady stream of worshippers is a miraculous event that adds to its mystique. During World War II, when the Pacific War broke out, Japanese aircraft bombed Singapore. South Bridge Road was hit, and several buildings near the temple were destroyed. The entire street was nearly reduced to rubble, yet the temple miraculously survived. It was only shaken by the powerful shockwaves but was not hit by any bombs, and its structure remained intact. People believed the temple was protected by Guanyin, and ever since, it has been thronged by devotees.

The main deity enshrined in the central hall of the temple is an exquisitely gilded statue of the Eighteen-Armed Guanyin. The statue shines brilliantly and is re-gilded every ten years. The temple enjoys a thriving flow of worshippers, with visitors coming almost daily. It is important to note that only small incense sticks are allowed for offerings—large ones are not permitted.
