Shin Island

Shin Island is located in Sin-do-ri, Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin County, Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea, about 5 kilometers from Ganghwa Island and 14 kilometers northwest of Incheon. It is said to be named after the honest and simple-hearted residents who live there. The island covers a total area of 6.92 square kilometers, with a coastline stretching 16.1 kilometers. Its highest peak is Jiufeng Mountain, which stands at an elevation of 178.4 meters. From the top, you can see islands in the Yellow Sea such as Yeongjong Island.

Shin Island is a small rocky island. Apart from an unmanned lighthouse and some coastal plants like mugwort and goosefoot, there are no trees on the island. Species such as the Chinese egret and black-tailed gull hunt for food—like mudskippers, crabs, and shrimp—while moving between the surrounding islets. Bird flocks begin crossing the sea in late April, lay eggs and breed from May to June, and migrate to Southeast Asia around early September for the winter. This period is an excellent time for birdwatching. In the past, transportation to Shin Island was limited, so it remained relatively unknown. However, the bridge connecting it to the famous tourist destination of Somaemul Island, completed in 1992, has changed that. During high tide, you can fish for mudskippers on the breakwaters on either side, and at night, it’s a popular spot for couples to go on dates.

Another highlight of Shin Island is Jiufeng Mountain. It is said that around 700 cherry blossom trees line the approximately 5-kilometer forest trail on the gentle slope of the mountain. The hiking paths are also surrounded by azaleas and oak trees, and the autumn foliage offers equally stunning views.
