Gifu City

Located in the southern part of Gifu Prefecture, Japan, Gifu City is the prefectural capital. It was designated as an International Conference City in 1988 and has since grown as a hub for international conference tourism. The crystal-clear Nagara River runs through the heart of the city, while the lush and verdant Mount Kinka rises majestically nearby, filling Gifu City with a rich natural ambiance.

Gifu City boasts a wealth of attractive tourist destinations, including stunning natural landscapes, historic streets and buildings, and places that offer spiritual solace. Gifu Castle, the city’s most iconic landmark, sits atop Mount Kinka. The castle features an exhibition room with historical materials and an observation deck on its top floor, making it a favorite among visitors. Gifu Park, embraced by the nature of Mount Kinka, houses facilities such as the ruins of Nobunaga's castle and the Gifu City History Museum. Plum Grove Park, renowned as a prime spot for plum blossom viewing, is home to about 50 varieties and over 1,300 plum trees, with the best time to admire their colorful blooms being late March each year. Other must-visits include the Gifu City History Museum, the Nagara River Cormorant Fishing Museum, Mount Kinka, Suufuku Temple, and Nagara River Onsen.

The cormorant fishing on the clear-flowing Nagara River is a summer spectacle in Gifu City, with a history of approximately 1,300 years. From May 11 to October 15 each year, except during river flooding and on the night of the full moon in mid-autumn, the cormorant fishing show is held every evening. Events such as taiko drum performances and fireworks displays are held on the opening night of the fishing season, adding to the festive atmosphere.
