A Spring Ode to Gifu: The Grand Float Parade of Takayama Festival

In Japan, spring is not only about cherry blossoms in full bloom, but also about vibrant festivals that are a must-see highlight. One of Japan’s Three Great Festivals, the “Takayama Festival” in Gifu, takes place this year on April 14 and 15. Twelve resplendent and gorgeous yatai (floats) parade around the red Nakabashi Bridge and Kamiichicho Street, among which three floats—Sambaso, Ryujin-tai, and Ishidono-tai—are dedicated to the deities, and their evening processions add dazzling splendor to the night.

Centered around the magnificent yatai floats, the Takayama Festival boasts a history of 400 to 500 years and is held annually in sync with the seasons of spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. The ancient mountain town bustles with people everywhere. Nestled in the Takayama Basin of Gifu Prefecture, the area is surrounded by snow and ice in winter. In early April, the sound of taiko drums from the Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine heralds the joyous farewell to winter and the arrival of spring.

The highlight of the Takayama Festival is its gorgeous floats, especially those adorned with mechanical dolls. Thanks to the master craftsmen’s experience and closely guarded techniques, these dolls can perform gravity-defying flips and even reach out to grab objects while suspended. Their skills are nothing short of miraculous. Additionally, the “matsuri gyoretsu” (festival procession), rich in the local culture and folk traditions of the Hida region, is also a major attraction. It includes mikoshi (portable shrines), lion dances, gagaku (court music), kagura (Shinto music and dance), and cockfighting dances. Among them, the gagaku procession features “shachu” members wearing formal black hats and attire, playing court music passed down from the Kamakura period with three wind and three percussion instruments—an exceptionally precious performance.

The first day of the festival begins around 09:00 in the morning and concludes with the evening procession at approximately 21:30. The second day starts around 09:00 in the morning and ends around 14:00 in the afternoon. On the first evening, there is also a “Night Festival,” where the already dazzling floats are adorned with sparkling lanterns and parade through the city of Takayama accompanied by music, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

To fully appreciate the beauty of the yatai, which showcases the exceptional craftsmanship and refined taste of the “Hida artisans,” be sure to plan your time well—you might not even make it onto the train at JR Takayama Station due to the crowds.
