Introduction

Tsukuba City is located in Ibaraki Prefecture to the northeast of Tokyo, approximately 60 kilometers from central Tokyo, covering an area of 28,400 hectares. It is a city with a high concentration of research facilities and educational institutions, often referred to as Japan’s “Silicon Valley.” The city boasts a clean urban landscape and beautiful surroundings, with buildings of diverse styles and soft, muted colors, spread out sparsely among pine forests and flower gardens. The main attraction near Tsukuba is Mount Tsukuba, a famous mountain in the Kanto region and Japan’s second most renowned peak after Mount Fuji. It is said that when viewed from afar, the mountain appears blue in the morning, green at noon, and purple in the evening, making it a source of poetic inspiration since ancient times. The mountaintop is divided into two peaks, dotted with numerous television towers, earning it the nickname “Radio and TV Boulevard.” The mountain is covered with towering ancient trees and is home to wild boars, foxes, badgers, rabbits, owls, and various bird species. On clear days, visitors can see Tokyo, Mount Fuji, and Lake Kasumigaura—Japan’s second-largest lake—from the summit, and to the east, the Pacific Ocean.
