Convenient Travel Across Greater Tokyo: Ibaraki Airport Opens on March 11

In response to the significant growth in international travelers and to meet the demand for air transport in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Ibaraki Airport in Omitama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Kanto region, is set to officially commence operations on March 11 this year. In addition to aiming to attract low-cost airlines, Ibaraki Airport is also among the first airports in Japan to confirm international flight routes.

During the first three months of operation, Ibaraki Airport will offer scheduled flights seven times a week to destinations such as Seoul, South Korea, and Kobe, Japan, as well as chartered flights to Taipei, Guam, Busan, Hawaii, and other locations. By May, around 10 flights are confirmed between Taipei and Ibaraki.

Ibaraki Prefecture boasts beautiful scenery, including the expansive Ushihama Coast in Kitakata, and Kairakuen Garden in the main city of Mito, one of Japan’s three most famous gardens, home to over 1,000 plum trees of more than 300 varieties. Kasama is known for its Kasama-yaki pottery, which originated in the 18th century. The area is home to numerous kilns and ceramic art museums, and in autumn, it hosts Japan’s oldest and grandest chrysanthemum festival, organized by Kasama Inari Shrine.

Nearby attractions also include the ornate and magnificent Toshogu Shrine in Nikko; not only is it a representative architectural masterpiece of the Momoyama culture, but it was also inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Together with Rinnō-ji Temple and Futarasan Shrine, also located in Nikko, they are collectively known as “Nikkō’s Two Shrines and One Temple.” Additionally, in Oku-Nikko, you can find the serene natural surroundings of Kegon Falls and Chuzenji Lake. Kinugawa Onsen, nestled amidst jungle streams, is not only steeped in history but also offers beautiful valley scenery, making it highly popular among Tokyo residents.

It takes just 45 minutes to reach Kairakuen Garden from Ibaraki Airport, while traveling to places such as Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen takes nearly half the time compared to departing from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. A bus ride from Ibaraki Airport to Tokyo Station takes approximately 85 minutes. With the development of future flight routes, visiting Greater Tokyo will gain a more convenient new gateway.
