Hitachi City

Hitachi City is a city in the northern part of the Kantō region of Japan, located in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It prospered due to the mining of the Hitachi Mine. The city is the third most populous in Ibaraki Prefecture, serves as a company town for Hitachi, and is also home to Ibaraki Christian University.

Hitachi City is located in the northern part of the Kantō Plain, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Taga Mountain Range. The urban area is long and narrow from north to south, with much of its flatland designated for Hitachi Ltd. and its affiliated companies, so many residential areas are situated in the mountainous zones. The city boasts a long coastline with six beaches, making it a popular summer retreat. There are numerous cherry blossom trees throughout the city, earning it a spot among Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.” In the northwestern part of the city, the Hitachi Mine features a towering 155.7-meter chimney that once served as the city’s symbol. On February 19, 1993, due to strong winds and structural aging, the chimney collapsed. Its current height is 54 meters. Other attractions worth visiting include the Masao Yoshida Music Memorial Museum, the Hitachi City Local History Museum, Mount Kamifushi, Mount Takane, and the Minami-Takano Shell Mound.
