Kiso Mountain Range

The Kiso Mountain Range is a north-south mountain range that stretches across the western part of Nagano Prefecture and the southeastern part of Gifu Prefecture on Japan’s Honshu Island. Commonly known as the Central Alps, it forms part of the Japanese Alps along with the Hida Mountain Range (Northern Alps) and the Akaishi Mountain Range (Southern Alps). Unlike the Hida and Akaishi ranges, the highest peak of the Kiso Mountains — Mount Kiso-Komagatake — stands at only 2,956 meters, making it relatively easy to climb and allowing for day trips.

To the northeast of the mountaintop lies Nekoike, a precious treasure trove of alpine flowers. When in season, colorful blooms burst forth in vibrant clusters and patches, adorning the meadows like a giant floral carpet. On the southeastern slope of the range is the “Senjiseki Ice Pit,” believed to be the remnant of a glacial excavation. Visitors can take a cable car from “Kirabira Heights” at the mountain’s base and reach the site in just a few minutes, making it very convenient.

The Kiso Mountain Range is not only rich in natural beauty but also boasts abundant cultural and historical attractions. At the eastern foot of its highest peak, Mount Kiso-Komagatake, lies Koma Highlands, home to the Koma Highlands Art Museum. The museum showcases works by renowned artists such as Masuo Ikeda and is highly popular for its distinctive exhibits.
