Mount Yatsugatake

Mount Yatsugatake refers to a volcanic mountain range stretching between Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures on the western side of Japan's Kanto region. With its highest peak reaching an elevation of 2,899 meters, it is one of Japan’s famous tourist destinations. The range consists of eight main peaks, including the highest, Mount Akadake, as well as Mount Chūō, Mount Iō, Mount Amida, and Mount Yoko—hence the name.

Mount Yatsugatake is one of Japan’s hundred most famous volcanoes and has also been selected as part of Japan’s Geological White Selection. It is highly popular among tourists. The area is home to numerous alpine plants, and every summer—especially from late June to late August—when the plants flourish and wildflowers bloom brilliantly across the slopes, the scenery is exceptionally beautiful, attracting many hikers and sightseers. In winter, the peaks of Mount Yatsugatake are blanketed in snow, creating a pristine white landscape. When the weather warms up, the snow melts and seeps underground, eventually emerging as clear springs. These springs were designated as part of the “100 Famous Waters of Japan” by the former Environment Agency in 1985.

Mount Yatsugatake is also an excellent location for stargazing. It is said that auroras have been spotted in this region, which is quite remarkable. In recent years, the management authorities of Mount Yatsugatake have introduced ambitious plans to enhance the natural landscape with high-tech artificial visuals, aiming to create additional man-made attractions to draw more international visitors.
