Iida City

Iida City is a city located in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture in the Chūbu region of Japan. During the Edo period, it developed as a castle town under the Iida Domain. The city is situated in the central part of the Ina Basin, the southernmost area of Nagano Prefecture, bordered to the northwest by Kiso District adjacent to the Kiso Mountain Range, and to the northeast it connects with three villages including Iijima Town in Kamiiina District and Matsukawa Town in Shimoina District.

A river called the Tenryū River flows from north to south through the center of Iida’s urban area. Historically, it has been a bustling hub centered around commerce and industry. The Tenryū Riverbanks are mainly rice paddies, and some hilly areas also feature numerous fields and orchards, while the mountainous regions include peaks exceeding 2,000 meters in elevation. The city is home to many historical sites, including Ōdai-juku, Tenryūkyō, Motohongū Shrine, Kaizen-ji Temple, the Iida City Art Museum, the Kawamoto Kihachirō Doll Museum, Iida City Zoo, Itakura Jin’ya, and the Akamon Gate.
