Matsumoto City

Matsumoto is a city in the central part of the Chūshin region of Japan and the central area of Nagano Prefecture. It is the second-largest city in Nagano Prefecture, as well as a Special City and an International Convention and Tourism City. The city developed as a castle town centered around the national treasure, Matsumoto Castle, and boasts a history of over 400 years. Since the Meiji era, it has cultivated a rich cultural heritage, earning it the nickname "City of Learning."

Nestled among towering mountains at elevations of around 3,000 meters, Matsumoto lies to the west of the renowned Japanese Alps and to the east of Japan’s largest and highest plateau, the Norikura Highlands. From its elevated vantage points, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views that make it worthy of the title "City of Mountains." The city is blessed with naturally stunning landscapes and distinct seasons, making it a favorite spot for musicians and a frequent host to music events, thus gaining the reputation as the "City of Music." It is a picturesque city surrounded by the famous Japanese Alps, with clearly defined seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, refreshing breezes on the highlands in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and snow-blanketed scenery in winter—each season showcasing its unique charm.

Historically, the city has been fortunate to avoid the devastation of war on multiple occasions, preserving numerous historical sites such as Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto City Art Museum, Matsumoto City Museum, Matsumoto City Archaeological Museum, Matsumoto City Clock Museum, Matsumoto Former Priest House, and the Nakayama Ruins.
