Morrison Chapel

Morrison Chapel is located within the permanent cemetery adjacent to the new site of the Orient Foundation. This Christian chapel was built in 1821 and renovated in 1922. The chapel features arched windows and doors with unique designs, and charming small round lamps illuminate its entrance. The surrounding area is serene and refined. Inside this oldest Christian preaching site in Macau, there are only ten pews. The chapel's ceiling retains its historic beams, rafters, and two long ceiling fans, adding a quaint charm.

Morrison Chapel was built for the small Christian community in Macau. The cemetery contains fifty tombstones of British and American individuals, reminiscent of Macau’s past days as an international business hub and home to a naval presence. This small stone-built chapel is also known as the chapel erected in honor of missionary Robert Morrison, who translated the Bible into Chinese. Its stained-glass windows depict the image of a Bible and bear inscriptions. On either side of the altar are monuments commemorating James Matheson and Henry John Morrison.
