Old Protestant Cemetery

The Old Protestant Cemetery is located in the northwest of Macau, north of St. Anthony's Church and to the right of the site of the Orient Foundation. It is the final resting place of notable figures such as the famous painter George Chinnery and missionary Robert Morrison. The cemetery features a small Romanesque chapel. After World War II, the cemetery was handed over to the Anglican Church, and the chapel was named after Robert Morrison. It is part of the "Historic Centre of Macao."

The Old Protestant Cemetery was established in 1821 by the British East India Company to address the lack of burial grounds for Protestants in Catholic-dominated Macau at the time. The cemetery houses the remains of nationals from Britain, the United States, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany. In addition to the aforementioned celebrities, it also includes: Rev. Samuel Dyer (pioneer of the "divisible type" printing technique for Chinese characters and father-in-law of missionary Hudson Taylor); British Royal Navy Captain Henry John Spencer-Churchill (son of George Spencer-Churchill and great-uncle of Winston Churchill); U.S. Navy Lieutenant Joseph Harrod Adams (grandson of the second U.S. President John Adams and nephew of the sixth U.S. President John Quincy Adams), among others.

The cemetery was closed in 1858 and has since been referred to as the "Old" Protestant Cemetery. Additionally, it served as the filming location where Bruce Lee’s character in the movie "Fist of Fury" bids an emotional farewell to his master Huo Yuanjia.
