Shigu Cold Spring and Upside-down Pagoda

The "Shigu Cold Spring," once listed among the Eight Scenic Spots of Yunzhong, is located in these two grottoes. Shigu refers to the first grotto, where you can hear a dull drumming sound if you strike the ground — a phenomenon that can still be faintly heard today. Cold Spring refers to the small stream at the foot of the rock outside the second grotto, which still flows with spring water.

Both grottoes have a central pillar tower, with similar designs and layouts. The towers are built with imitation wooden-structure, roof-shaped capitals. At each corner of the towers, an octagonal pillar is carved, adding to their grandeur and magnificence. The carved wooden architectural elements such as the roof-like eaves, tile ridges, and bracket sets on the tower levels provide tangible evidence for the study of Northern Wei architecture. Due to weathering, the towers appear larger at the top and smaller at the bottom, hence they are called the "Upside-down Pagoda."
