Datong Liang Sicheng Memorial Hall

The Liang Sicheng Memorial Hall is located in a newly built sunken courtyard within the belt park outside Heping Gate on the eastern city wall of Datong.

Liang Sicheng was from Xinhui, Guangdong Province, and was a renowned Chinese architect and architectural educator. He dedicated his life to the research of ancient Chinese architecture and to architectural education. He systematically investigated, organized, and studied the history and theory of ancient Chinese architecture, and is considered a pioneer and founding figure in this field. He participated in the design of the Monument to the People's Heroes and was a driving force behind the urban planning of the new China’s capital. He also led several major design projects after the founding of the People’s Republic. He served as an advisor to the selection committee for the national flag and emblem of New China.

The memorial hall features four exhibition rooms that use a wealth of text, photographs, and books to provide a detailed introduction to Mr. Liang’s life, with particular emphasis on the period when he conducted surveys of ancient architecture in Datong. A number of his valuable monographs that have been collected here are especially precious. Visitors can also gain insight into the outstanding contributions, personal charm, and legendary life of Mrs. Lin Huiyin, Mr. Liang’s wife, who played a significant role in the preservation of China’s ancient architecture.
