Zhongshan Road in Urumqi is a commercial street located in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It stretches over 2,000 meters from Tianshan Department Store in the east to Danlu Boutique Plaza and Oriental 100 Plaza in the west.

History

Zhongshan Road Commercial Street in Urumqi was officially named in March 1999. On March 14 of the same year, it was jointly designated as a “No Fake Goods Demonstration Street” by four ministries—the Central Propaganda Department, China’s State Bureau of Internal Trade, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, and the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision—making it the only such demonstration street in the entire Xinjiang region.

In 2001, China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce further named Zhongshan Road a “Satisfactory Street for Combating Counterfeits and Protecting Rights.”

On July 18, 2005, a red-and-gold plaque inscribed with the words “China’s Famous Commercial Street” was unveiled at Zhongquan Plaza on Zhongshan Road in Urumqi, marking the street’s official inclusion among China’s top ten famous commercial streets.

Economy

The Zhongshan Road commercial street hosts 214 business outlets, covering a total retail area of 159,000 square meters, employing 1,100 staff, and receiving an average daily foot traffic of 30,000 people, which surges to 150,000 during holidays. Vehicle flow reaches 2,300 cars per hour, and annual sales amount to 2 billion yuan, with tax contributions totaling 80 million yuan annually. These figures rank first among all commercial streets in the Xinjiang region. Zhongshan Road has evolved into a modern commercial street characterized by dense retail networks, high foot traffic, convenient shopping, and satisfying consumer experiences.

Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925), also known as Wen, with the courtesy name Zaizhi, literary names Risshin and Yixian, childhood name Dixiang, and alias Zhongshanqiao, often used the name Zhongshan.
