So, what are the dangers of outdoor activities in spring, and what should be kept in mind? On the 17th, a reporter interviewed Yang Jun, a seasoned outdoor expert in Xinjiang.
Spring is the season when snowmelt floods are most likely to occur. What should you pay attention to when hiking outdoors? Yang Jun said: “In Xinjiang, especially during outdoor activities in spring, it’s particularly important to be aware of the risk of snowmelt floods. Most of the mountain snow melts between late March and mid-April. This is the biggest risk. Generally, we avoid hiking in the mountains during this period. You might consider going to other safer places instead. For example, you could visit desert or Gobi areas, such as the Turpan region to explore cultural relics and historic sites, or go hiking in rural areas—just in time for the apricot blossoms. There’s also the Kumtag Desert near Shanshan, where you can enjoy the local cultural landscape. If you’re hiking along riverbanks, make sure to pitch your camp far from the water. Choose a spot halfway up the mountain, in a drier area, or opt for a wider section of the river—it will be safer.”
Yang Jun said that it’s best to have a professional and certified guide lead the hike. It’s also important to understand the route you’ll be taking, anticipate potential issues, and ensure communication remains reliable. Before setting off, share your itinerary on public websites. The trails around Urumqi, such as those in the Tianshan Mountain area, are relatively safe compared to those in inland regions. The vegetation here is more uniform and simpler—mainly spruce, Tianshan pine, and grasslands—so getting lost or experiencing falls is less likely. But if something does go wrong, don’t panic. Yang Jun added: “If hikers encounter an emergency in the mountains, they should first consult the Xinjiang Mountaineering Rescue Team, a volunteer-based group. They can provide technical advice. Whether it’s a major or minor issue, the rescue team will offer suggestions, help you make decisions, and determine the appropriate measures. Don’t let minor problems escalate, but also don’t underestimate serious ones.”
