Hami Devil City

Hami Devil City is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Guide: Hami Devil City is located south of Wubao Township in Hami City, about 20 kilometers from Wubao and approximately 100 kilometers from Hami City. Due to its mysterious nature, those unfamiliar with the terrain risk getting lost if caught in a storm.

The Hami Yardang landform extends about 400 kilometers from Camel Peak outside Yandun in the east, passing through the Yamansu Iron Mine and Dankou Coal Mine, to the Thirteen Rooms area of Shar Lake in Wubao, spanning a width of about 5–10 kilometers. This unique geographical feature in Hami was naturally formed over a long period of wind erosion.

In Devil City, you can see various rock formations resembling castles, temples, stupas, stone tablets, human figures, and animals. There are also dazzling steep cliffs, colorful agates scattered among rocks, petrified wood commonly found on the ground, and plant fossils with well-preserved leaves. Occasionally, you may even find small round stones resembling dinosaur egg fossils, as well as marine fish fossils and bird fossils. When night falls, eerie howls akin to ghostly wails may be heard, which is why it's called “Devil City.”

In fact, there are real ancient castle structures and ruins of old houses here—the Eskeqiaer Ancient Castle: a rectangular rammed-earth building about 5 meters high, situated on a wind-eroded platform roughly 6 meters above the ground. With doors and windows at the front, this was once a place of human habitation—a stop along the ancient Silk Road or perhaps a southwest outpost of the Hami Kingdom.

According to local speculation, before Shar Lake (which connects to Lop Nur via shifting sands) to the west of this area dried up, there were villages and residents here. When the water source shifted (due to crustal movement) and Shar Lake disappeared, the trees and birds were partially fossilized in the windblown sand. The inhabitants had no choice but to leave their homeland, even relocating their ancestors’ remains. Today, only ruins remain. Admission / Opening Hours: 40 RMB in peak season, 25 RMB in off-season
