Ulungur Lake Coastal Scenic Area

The Ulungur Lake Coastal Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national wetland park.

Ulungur Lake, also known as Buluntuo Sea, Dahazi (with the neighboring Jili Lake called Xiaohazi), or Fuhai, is a rift lake situated in the northern part of the Junggar Basin in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the Uyghur language, it is called Galezarbash Lake, also known as Buluntuo Sea or Dahazi, and is where the Ulungur River ends. The lake surface has an elevation of 468 meters. The lake is roughly triangular in shape, about 30 kilometers wide from north to south and 35 kilometers long from east to west, covering a water area of 827 square kilometers. The Ulungur River first flows into Jili Lake, then exits from the northwest and joins Ulungur Lake via the 8-kilometer-long Kuygou River. The salinity of the lake water gradually increases from the river inlet westward, reaching 2.7 grams per liter, giving it a slightly salty taste. In 1969, a watershed between the Irtysh River and Ulungur Lake was breached, and the Irtysh-to-Lake Diversion Channel project was constructed, which can divert 185 million cubic meters of water into Ulungur Lake annually. The lake is renowned for producing fish species such as the five-spined stickleback, red fish, common carp, Baikal ide, European perch, asp, and eastern bream. The lakeshore area serves as lush grassland pasture.

The main ethnic group living in the Altay region is the Kazakh people, who have certain cultural taboos that should be well understood and respected. When visiting a Kazakh home, keep in mind: do not touch the utensils while the host is cooking, and never poke at the food or lift the pot lid with your hands; meat offered to you by the host or bedding provided for your overnight stay must not be refused—you must accept them cheerfully, or the host may think you look down on them; also, do not praise the host’s livestock or hunting dogs in their presence; do not point at people with your fingers or a stick, as this will be seen as counting them like livestock; generally, avoid staying in a Kazakh home for more than two days.

Beitun Buluntuo Sea Xihai Style Park is located on the western shore of Buluntuo Sea, at the confluence of the freshwater zone of Buluntuo Sea (Xiaohazi) and the saline zone of Buluntuo Sea. It is the terminal part of Ulungur Lake, 22 kilometers from Beitun and 82 kilometers from Altay City. This area is a necessary route from Beitun to Kanas.
