The Tomb Complex in the Greater Kanas Scenic Area

The Tomb Complex in the Greater Kanas Scenic Area is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Kanas Scenic Area is hailed as a paradise on earth and the "Little Switzerland of the East," renowned for its breathtaking lake and mountain scenery. Archaeologists discovered an ancient tomb complex near the Tuvan New Village in Hemu Township, less than 5 kilometers in a straight line from the surface of Kanas Lake. Subsequently, it was named the Tuvan New Village Ancient Tomb Complex based on its location. According to preliminary assessments by archaeological experts, the age of the tomb complex dates roughly from the Warring States Period to the Han Dynasty, around 2,000 years ago, with more than 60 tombs in total.

This ancient tomb complex is relatively rare in the excavation history of the Altay region, though similar discoveries have been made on the Eurasian steppe. This archaeological excavation is also the first of its kind to be conducted within the Kanas Scenic Area. The discovery is of great significance for gaining a deeper understanding of the local ancient human society and way of life, as well as for enhancing the cultural depth of the scenic area.
