Xinjiang Stone City

Xinjiang Stone City is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a key cultural relics protection unit in China.

Xinjiang Stone City is located on the northern side of Kashi Prefecture’s Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County and is a renowned ancient city ruin along the historic trade routes of Xinjiang. The fortress is built on a high hill, featuring an extremely steep and rugged terrain. Outside the city, there are multiple layers of intermittent walls, with overlapping stone mounds and piles of rubble between them, creating the unique landscape of Stone City. During the Han Dynasty, this area was the capital of Puli, one of the Thirty-Six Kingdoms of the Western Regions. After the Tang Dynasty unified the Western Regions, a garrison known as the Congling Shouzhuo was established here. In the early Yuan Dynasty, large-scale construction was carried out to expand the city walls, giving the old Stone City a new look. In the 28th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government set up the Puli Hall here and carried out repairs and expansions to the old city.
