Karamay No. 1 Well is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

K1 Well

Karamay No. 1 Well, abbreviated as “K1 Well,” is the first oil well drilled in the Karamay Oilfield, hence its name. After the founding of New China, from 1951 to 1955, the state sent multiple geological survey teams to conduct explorations near Black Oil Hill. On June 6, 1955, the No. 1219 Youth Drilling Team from Dushanzi identified the location for Well No. 1 near Black Oil Hill. Drilling commenced on July 6 of the same year. The well reached a depth of 626 meters, and on October 29, it struck industrial-grade oil flow, initially producing 3.7 tons of crude oil per day. This marked the discovery of the Karamay Oilfield. Since then, Karamay Oilfield became the first major oilfield discovered and developed after the founding of New China.

Currently, Well No. 1 continues to produce oil. On October 29, 1982, a monument was erected at the site to commemorate the event, standing 4 meters tall.

In May 2013, Karamay No. 1 Well was listed as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
