Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area

The Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area is a classic red tourism destination, as well as a base for patriotic education and national defense education.

The Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Memorial Hall is located on Liupan Mountain within the territory of Longde, at an altitude of 2,832 meters. It is 50 kilometers from downtown Guyuan and 14 kilometers from Longde County. National Highway 312, Provincial Highway 101, and the Yinchuan–Pingliang Road pass by at the foot of the mountain. It is a red tourism attraction built by the Party Committee and Government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to commemorate the Red Army’s crossing of Liupan Mountain during the Long March and the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Long March.

The memorial hall was completed on September 18, 2005, and consists of five parts: the memorial hall itself, a memorial monument, a memorial square, a memorial pavilion, and a poetry-reciting platform. The memorial hall covers an area of 2,159 square meters and is divided into four sections: “The Red Army Fears Not the Trials of the Long March,” “Red Flags Flutter in the Western Wind,” “All Smiles After the Three Armies Pass,” and “He Who Has Never Been to the Great Wall Is Not a True Man.” The first three sections use 96 photos from the Red Army's Long March period, 20 charts, and 81 physical objects (including 15 replicated telegrams) to recreate the history of the struggles of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army during its three passages through the Liupan Mountain region. The section “He Who Has Never Been to the Great Wall Is Not a True Man” uses 115 images to showcase the tremendous changes in the homeland built by the people of Liupan, inspired by the spirit of the Long March.

The memorial monument stands atop a 4,900-square-meter platform at the top of the memorial hall. It is 26.8 meters high, 18 meters long, and 4.5 meters wide. The front is inlaid with ten gilded characters reading “Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Memorial Monument,” inscribed by Comrade Jiang Zemin. On the east and west sides are hand-written versions of Chairman Mao’s famous poems “The Long March” and “Qingpingyue: Liupan Mountain.”

The memorial square covers an area of 10,000 square meters. Two sets of group sculptures at the entrance depict the joyous scenes of the Hui and Han peoples welcoming the Red Army and the magnificent moment of the Red Army crossing Liupan Mountain. The walls of the memorial square consist of three Red Army flags, each 12 meters high and 60 meters long, engraved with eight large golden characters written by Comrade Jiang Zemin: “The Spirit of the Long March Shines Forever.”

The memorial pavilion and poetry-reciting platform are situated on a mountain peak opposite the memorial hall, giving the entire scenic area a majestic and spectacular atmosphere.
