Tashi Qulong Monastery

Tashi Qulong Monastery is located at the mouth of the Tashi Qulong Valley in Xiazangke Township, northeastern Gadê County, approximately 75 kilometers from the county seat. It belongs to the Jonang school of Tibetan Buddhism. Its mother monastery is Zhanmuthang Monastery in Rangtang County, Sichuan Province. Legend has it that 100 years ago, upon the suggestion of Qialongwa Qielan Anmuga from Zhanmuthang Monastery, Axigenghe established a tent monastery in the Zangke tribe. By 1958, the monastery had over 100 monks, one living Buddha, and one monastic official. In 1984, it was reopened and now includes one earthen hall with 25 rooms, 25 monk dormitories, 9 prayer wheel rooms, 3 Buddha halls, one living Buddha, one monastic official, and 88 monks. Historically, Tashi Qulong Monastery functioned as a theocratic institution. The monastery has had seven successive heads, most of whom were tribal leaders.
