In 1982, Longen Monastery—Banma Dengbao established the Maqu Gesar Cultural Activity Center on the foundation of Longen Monastery. The center’s museum houses thirty generals crafted from sandalwood, as well as other significant historical relics. Additionally, the monastery has a Tibetan opera troupe composed of 45 monks who adapt the beloved ancient Tibetan hero Gesar’s deeds and other folk legends into performances on stage. In December 1993, Zhao Puchu, then Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and President of the Buddhist Association of China, inscribed the name “Maqu Gesar Culture Center.” The artistic activities of the Maqu Gesar Culture Center attract not only fellow Tibetans but also an increasing number of domestic and international tourists.
