The Former Residence of Ma Bufang in Hualong

The Former Residence of Ma Bufang, located in Yeluhu Village, Gandu Town, Hualong County, was constructed in two phases. In 1925, when Ma Bufang served as a regimental commander stationed at Qianchengtai in Hualong, he built a residence in Yeluhu Village covering an area of over 30 acres. The main structure featured a traditional Chinese courtyard layout with a front and back yard, enclosed within four walls and corner towers, and was later referred to as the East Courtyard. In 1946, the original residence was expanded westward by over 80 acres, bringing the total area to more than 110 acres. The expansion was completed in 1948. Surrounded by high walls, the compound resembles an ancient fortress. Two new Western-style two-story buildings were added — the Butterfly House and the Mandarin Duck House — along with several rows of single-story houses, forming both front and back courtyards. The architecture is quaint and elegant, with a uniquely distinctive style. The interiors are luxuriously furnished, while the courtyards are paved with square bricks, and walkways are inlaid with pebble mosaics featuring vivid and tasteful patterns that delight the senses. To the west lies a garden planted with flowers such as peonies, tree peonies, winter jasmine, and peach blossoms. In spring, when the flowers are in full bloom, they create a vibrant and fragrant scene that refreshes the spirit.
