Whether under a clear blue sky or during a gentle drizzle, people’s enthusiasm for picking yangmei (Chinese bayberry) on the mountain remains undimmed. Every year after the Summer Solstice, the lush green hills of Luxi are weighed down with clusters of yangmei hanging from the branches, glowing with vibrant hues of green and red, offering visitors a delightful experience that is as pleasing to the eye, delicious to the taste, fun to participate in, and uplifting to the spirit.

Yangmei is highly nutritious, with its flesh containing 12%-13% sugar, 0.5%-1.1% acid, and rich in vitamin C, as well as a certain amount of protein, fat, pectin, and eight types of amino acids beneficial to the human body. Yangmei can be made into various food products such as canned syrup, jam, preserves, juice, dried fruit, and fruit wine. It also offers multiple health benefits, including aiding digestion, removing dampness, relieving summer heat, providing warmth in cold weather, stopping diarrhea, promoting urination, and helping prevent cholera.

For two to three months between June and August, the residents of Luxi City gain an excellent new leisure destination—Yangmei Mountain. Within the mountain’s nearly 100-acre orchard, visitors from all around can be seen picking the deep purplish-red berries while chatting and laughing with friends. During the peak picking season, nearly a thousand people come up the mountain each day, with visitor numbers reaching tens of thousands over the course of a month.
