Shao Yao Garden at Lion Mountain

The Wuding Lion Mountain Scenic Area has long been renowned far and wide for its grand scale, diverse varieties, and early blooming period of southern peonies. Yet few people know that it also hosts Yunnan’s largest peony garden.

The peonies at Lion Mountain were introduced in the early 1990s from places such as Heze in Shandong and Luoyang in Henan. After more than ten years of cultivation and selective breeding, they have now grown to over ten thousand plants and more than 60 varieties, featuring a rich variety of shapes and vibrant colors. The flower forms include single-petal, lotus, chrysanthemum, rose, golden stamen, supported osmanthus, golden ring, crown, hydrangea, and spherical layered types. The colors range from white, pink, red, yellow, and purple to mixed hues. When in full bloom, they display a dazzling array of postures, exude a refreshing fragrance, and charm with their loveliness, encompassing the beauty of color, scent, and elegance. Every year from April 20 to May 10, the Lion Mountain Scenic Area holds a regular peony flower exhibition.
