Taihang Longkou Scenic Area

Taihang Longkou Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Taihang Longkou is located in Baibei Village, Qingcheng Town, Heshun County, Shanxi Province. It lies in the eastern part of Heshun County and enjoys very convenient transportation, being only thirty kilometers from the county seat. It borders Xingtai County of Hebei Province to the east, connects to the provincial capital Taiyuan to the west, neighbors Xiyang County and Shouyang County to the north, and adjoins Zuoquan County to the south. The scenic area is situated on the Shanxi-Hebei watershed and the great Taihang cliff. Over a thirty-kilometer stretch running north-south within the county, the terrain consists entirely of steep cliffs and precipices, which are awe-inspiring and dizzying to behold—truly, the most spectacular views are found atop the most perilous peaks. Within the scenic area, there are remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, as well as beacon towers and artillery emplacements. In Chinese history, during the late Tang Dynasty, the rebel army of Huang Chao took advantage of the treacherous terrain and natural defenses here, engaging in fierce battles. This has left behind many legendary tales among the local people.

The natural landscape here is unique. In the morning, you can witness the sea of clouds and sunrise, ever-shifting and boundlessly beautiful. In the evening, admire the sunset over the peaks, as layers of dark mountains are painted in hues of gold. Gazing into the distance, the mountains stand majestic, the sea of clouds vast and overwhelming. The grand and majestic spectacle is overwhelming to the eyes and leaves one in awe.

The northern and southern mountains stand facing each other, their shape resembling a colossal dragon’s body. The slopes are gentle and flat, entirely covered with dense, lush grass. Walking here feels like stepping into the vast grasslands of Mongolia, offering delightful and refreshing views. Whether strolling, horseback riding, archery, hiking, or having a picnic, it all carries a romantic charm, allowing you to fully embrace nature, bathe in the mountain breeze, reach up to touch the drifting clouds, and look down upon the myriad peaks. Truly, from afar it looks like a forest or ocean; up close, it feels spiritual and mystical. Every peak and stone is naturally formed, exquisitely crafted as if by the hands of gods—some resembling birds or beasts, incredibly lifelike; others like people or objects, vividly realistic.

The Guya Precipice within the scenic area is a natural barrier of the great Taihang cliff and the Shanxi-Hebei divide. It has long been famed in Shanxi and Hebei for its majestic, precipitous, and rugged beauty, but it is especially remembered by visitors for its perilous cliffside plank walkway and hanging temple. The plank walkway is about a hundred meters long, with an average width of less than one meter, and at its narrowest point, only about 0.5 meters wide. Ancient descriptions of this path say: “The cliff was split open to carve this plank road, just one to two feet wide. Looking up, you face the cliff niches; looking down, you see an abyss thousands of feet deep. There's no time to look ahead or behind—it sets your heart racing. Only those lucky enough to cross it can avoid lifelong regret. Truly, this plank walkway is harder to traverse than climbing a mountain of blades.”

During the war of resistance, the location of the scenic area served as one of the bases of the Eighth Route Army’s 129th Division and the Heshun guerrilla zone, making it an excellent site for patriotic education. Additionally, the scenic area features distinctive agritainment options, allowing you to fully experience the rural charm of Shanxi and leaving you with unforgettable memories.
