Zunyi Red Army Martyrs' Cemetery (Red Army Hill)

Zunyi Red Army Martyrs' Cemetery (Red Army Hill) is a classic red tourism destination.

The Red Army Martyrs' Cemetery is located on Little Dragon Hill at the foot of Phoenix Mountain in the city. The entire cemetery faces south, with the Xiang River in front and the lush, green Phoenix Mountain behind, overlooking the Red Flower Hill and Old Duck Hill where the Red Army once fought fiercely.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the people of Zunyi never forgot the Red Army soldiers who sacrificed their lives here during the Long March. They found the graves of 77 Red Army martyrs at the site of the former battlefield. In 1953, the municipal government decided to build a martyrs' cemetery on Little Dragon Hill, gradually relocating the remains of the martyrs to the hill. At the same time, the well-known "Red Army Tomb" from Sangmayai was also moved to Little Dragon Hill. Since then, the people of Zunyi have commonly referred to Little Dragon Hill as "Red Army Hill." After 40 years of maintenance and development, it has now become a well-established Red Army Martyrs' Cemetery.

Upon entering the cemetery gate and ascending the stone steps, the first thing that comes into view at the platform at the top of the cemetery is the majestic and uniquely designed Red Army Martyrs' Monument. On the front of the monument are the eight gilded characters "The Red Army Martyrs Shall Live Forever," inscribed on November 2, 1984. The entire monument is 30 meters high, with a base 6 meters wide and the top section 2 meters wide. At the top of the monument is a 5-meter-high hammer and sickle emblem, with its surface made of titanium alloy sheets arranged in a fish-scale pattern that shines brilliantly in the sunlight. Surrounding the monument is a large ring 20 meters in diameter, 2.7 meters high, and 2 meters above the ground. The outer wall of the ring is inlaid with 28 shining stars, symbolizing the 28 years of hard struggle by the Communist Party of China to achieve national governance. This victory was paid for with the blood of countless martyrs, who remain glorious in death, and their revolutionary spirit will shine forever. The inner wall of the ring features four groups of white marble reliefs depicting "Forcing the Wu River," "Zunyi People Welcoming the Red Army," "Victory at Lou Shan Guan," and "The Four Crossings of the Chishui River." The large ring is also supported by four 5-meter-high statues of Red Army soldiers, carved from purple granite. The southeast side depicts an elderly Red Army soldier, the southwest a young Red Army soldier, the northeast a Red Guard member, and the northwest a female Red Army soldier, symbolizing the Red Army’s mighty presence in all directions.
