Taichung’s New Hot Check-in Spot: The Brilliant Bloom of "Saffron" Light Sculpture!

Taichung has a new popular attraction again! Located in Civic Park, the light sculpture 《Spring Dawn》 is an international art piece inspired by saffron flowers. From a distance, it resembles a flower bud, but up close, it offers various playful details. Sunlight refracts through the glass of the sculpture, creating vibrant, ever-changing colors and stunning visual light effects. Since its unveiling in early June, it has attracted large crowds, with many going online to check in and take photos.

The public artist behind 《Spring Dawn》, Ed Carpenter, hails from Portland, Oregon, on the U.S.-Canada border. Due to the high latitude and long winters in the region, the first floral sprouts to emerge from the snow at the end of winter and beginning of spring are saffron flowers. The artist was struck by their resilience, which inspired the concept. With a flower bud as the base, surrounded by light sculpture shapes resembling sharp teeth, the piece rises from the ground towards the sky, symbolizing the awakening of all plants and flowers in spring, and metaphorically representing Taichung's renewal and ever-flowing vitality.

However, some members of the public remain concerned that the sharp, budding shapes of 《Spring Dawn》 might negatively impact the Feng Shui of the City Council. The Construction Bureau clarified that the light sculpture is located at the center of Civic Park, symbolizing “harmony between the government and the council, and flourishing growth.” Relevant departments also invited a Feng Shui expert to observe the site. At just 22 meters tall, 《Spring Dawn》 does not fit the claim that “tall buildings negatively affect shorter structures.”
