Zunyi Fahua Temple

Situated atop Lion Mountain to the north of Fenghuang Mountain in Zunyi City, the temple is hidden among ancient pines and maple woods. You can reach it by driving straight up from Hongmei Road at Meiling Factory or by ascending over 300 stone steps along the winding path by the road. After walking about a hundred more steps, you will arrive at the famed Fahua Temple in the historic city. The three large Chinese characters “Fahua Temple,” inscribed by the late Zhao Puchu, former president of the Buddhist Association of China, gleam brightly in the center of the memorial archway.

History

Legend has it that Fahua Temple was built in the first year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty, boasting a history of 160 years. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. In 1995, under the painstaking efforts of the current abbot, Master Zhijue, the temple was rebuilt on the mountainside, perched on cliffs. With dark-tiled roofs, cement pillars, and soaring eaves, it exudes the classic charm of an ancient temple. From the top of the temple, visitors can take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful cityscape. The statues of Manjushri and Samantabhadra inside the temple showcase exceptional sculptural artistry. The temple houses six jade Buddha statues brought from Myanmar, including the seated Buddha, reclining Buddha, Maitreya Buddha, Manjushri, and Samantabhadra. Currently, Abbot Zhijue is devotedly constructing the Seven Buddhas Shengshi Pagoda. Once completed, the new pagoda will add another stunning attraction to the historic city.
