Danxia Mountain Huguo Temple is located approximately 15 kilometers south of the ancient city of Panxian, nestled among the peaks near Shuitang Town at an altitude of 1,888 meters. In appearance, it is a towering conical peak that rises abruptly from the ground, standing out like a crane among chickens, with a majestic presence. Legend has it that during the Han Dynasty, rosy clouds shaped like cranes hovered in the sky above, hence the name “Danxia Mountain.” It was described by Xu Xiake as having “steep cliffs excelling in beauty” and “shaped like a heavenly pillar.” Historical records note “the splendid scenery of Danxia, where Xu Xiake spent three days,” marking the longest time he stayed in one scenic area. At the mountain’s summit stands Huguo Temple, which gained fame after receiving an imperial edict from Emperor Guangxu, bestowing upon it 5,048 volumes of the Buddhist scriptures known as the Tripitaka, along with imperial treasures such as a ceremonial carriage and jade seals. The temple also houses a 2,000-year-old “treasure of the mountain”—palm-leaf scriptures. Xu Xiake visited Danxia Mountain three times, engaging in candlelit discussions with Master Bumei, and sampling local delicacies. During the “Third Day of the Third Month” temple fair, thousands of visitors, young and old, flock here to climb the Sunrise Viewing Tower, all to witness the breathtaking sight described as “Heaven is not far above, and the land before your eyes is naturally vast.”
