Surrounded by distant mountains on all sides, Yanjiawan Reservoir is lush with greenery, its vibrant hues creating a serene scene of clear waters and emerald trees shrouded in misty hills. A legendary tale is told in Yanjiawan: the area was originally called Songlinpo (Pine Slope), where two families—the Yan and the Zhao—lived. The Yan family had only one daughter, named Yanzhu, who was naturally beautiful and intelligent; the Zhao family had a son named Bao Yin, who was handsome, sincere, and kind-hearted. The two grew up as childhood sweethearts and fell deeply in love. They pledged their eternal love by a well, vowing to be together forever. During the Lantern Festival one year, Yanzhu and Bao Yin went to watch a play at the theater in Ludun. Unexpectedly, Yanzhu caught the eye of a local official named Lü, who was determined to marry her. The Lü family bribed the authorities to have Bao Yin conscripted and sent to guard the frontier. On the way, they poisoned him. When Yanzhu learned of this, she was heartbroken and wept endlessly. One day, she came to the well where they had made their vows, crying so bitterly that the sky darkened and the earth seemed to mourn. Her blood-filled tears filled the well, and in the end, she threw herself into it, dying for love. Suddenly, the well overflowed, gradually forming a stream that grew into a pool of clear water, irrigating thousands of acres of fertile farmland. Meanwhile, Bao Yin was transformed into a stone figure, guarding the riverbank day and night. To commemorate the love story of Yanzhu and Bao Yin, the locals renamed Songlinpo to Yanjiawan.

After Yanzhu’s death, she was buried on a small hill near Yanjiawan that resembled a turtle. When the water rose, the “turtle” and her tomb would submerge together; when the water receded, they would emerge again. The locals called this sight “the divine turtle playing in the water.”
