Wenjiang Confucius Temple

Wenjiang Confucius Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

Wenjiang Confucius Temple is located on Wenmiao Street in the urban area of Wenjiang and is also known as Liucheng Confucius Temple or Yufu Confucius Temple. It was built in the early years of the Xianping era during the Song Dynasty, destroyed during the late Ming Dynasty due to warfare, and rebuilt in the eighth year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1669 AD). It underwent multiple expansions during the Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Daoguang reigns of the Qing Dynasty. During the Republican period, it was once used as the site of the county middle school and also served as the office of the People's Government of Wenjiang District.

On February 16, 1984 (the 15th day of the first lunar month), the Dacheng Hall of the Confucius Temple was destroyed by fire. The side halls on the left and right, the pavilions on the east and west, the second hall, and the Pan Pond still retain their original architectural features. The Dacheng Hall has now been rebuilt to its original appearance and reopened to the public in October 2005. Wenjiang was the territory of the ancient Shu Yufu Kingdom over 4,000 years ago. Because the Yufu king established his capital here and ordered the widespread planting of willow trees as the national boundary, the ancient capital of Yufu was filled with weeping willows and was historically known as “Liucheng” (present-day Yufu City ruins north of Wenjiang). After the Yufu era, the city continued to be covered with willows welcoming spring every year. During the Sui Dynasty, Wanchun County was established and commonly referred to as Liucheng. Due to changes in waterways, the county seat was relocated southward to what is now Liucheng, and it was renamed Wenjiang during the Tang Dynasty. The custom of planting willows was prevalent throughout the county, with the last large-scale planting occurring during the major renovation in the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, when over 700 willow trees were planted along the moat surrounding the city. The reputation of “Liucheng” has endured for a full four thousand years. Wenjiang Confucius Temple is also called Liucheng Confucius Temple.

Protected area: The eastern boundary is defined by the drip line of the east side hall, the southern boundary by the Lingxing Gate, the western boundary by the surrounding wall, and the northern boundary by the screen wall.
