Panta Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Panta Temple is located in Panta Village, about 5 kilometers west of Qionglai City, Chengdu. It gets its name from a large rock as solid as a slab. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it was a renowned Buddhist site. The existing Mahavira Hall was rebuilt in the 25th year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1392) and renovated in the 2nd year of the Zhengtong era (1437). Its structure features a single-eave hip-and-gable roof, with a width of four bays and three openings, and a depth of the same; the floor plan is square, with each side measuring 9.95 meters. The eaves are adorned with bracket sets. At the center of the hall are clay sculptures of the “Three Saints of the West” (also known in Buddhism as the “Three Saints of Amitabha”), with Amitabha in the middle, Guanyin on the left, and Mahasthamaprapta on the right. All three statues are seated in lotus position on lotus thrones, each about 2 meters tall. The hall’s four walls feature Ming Dynasty murals (meticulously painted in rich colors), which are precious cultural relics depicting the Buddhist story of the “Fifty-three Visits of Sudhana.” Each story in the murals is separated by landscapes, trees, drifting clouds, buildings, and pavilions, making them both interconnected and independently composed. The brushwork is vigorous and fluid, the colors vibrant, the composition well-structured, and the figures intricately rendered, resembling a treasured classical comic strip. There are also four cliffside grottoes with carved statues remaining in front of and behind the temple. The grotto in front of the temple, carved in the 15th year of the Yuanhe era, features one Buddha and two bodhisattvas, with relief carvings of stupas and a band of musicians on the left and right outer walls. Behind the temple, there are five grottoes: one depicting “Thousand Buddhas,” one showing the “Pure Land Transformation,” and another featuring Esoteric Buddhist statues, also bearing the stylistic influence of the Tang Dynasty.
