Baiyangwan Residential House

Baiyangwan Residential House is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiang'an County.

Baiyangwan Residential House, also known as "Baiyangwan" Residential House, is located in Baiyangwan Group, Liugeng Village, Liugeng Town. The residence was first built during the Qing Dynasty, though the exact year is unknown, and faces southwest from a northeast orientation. It is built on four terraced foundations of varying heights, lower in the front and higher in the back, forming a composite courtyard complex that extends three sections deep. Horizontally, the left side features a single-entry wing room, while the right side has a two-entry wing room.

Legend has it that many years ago, this was a mountain valley covered with blooming flowers and fruit trees, and shaded by towering trees. People often spotted two white goats in the forest. One day, an old hunter who had been tracking a leopard collapsed from exhaustion and fell asleep on the earthen ridge. In his dream, he saw a young man in white, panting and urgently calling for help. The old hunter suddenly woke up, gripping his spear and carrying his bow, only to see a leopard pouncing on the two white goats on the hillside.

The old hunter quickly drew his bow and shot an arrow, hitting the leopard and saving the two goats. Only after killing the leopard did the hunter realize, as if waking from a dream, that it had been one of the white goats that had appeared in his dream. To show their gratitude, the goats appeared in another dream, telling the hunter to build a home and settle down in that very mountain valley.

Later, the old hunter built a house in the valley and lived a happy and prosperous life. To commemorate the two white goats, he named his fine residence “Baiyangwan” (White Goat Valley). But at some point later, people changed the name to the homophonous but differently written “Baiyangwan” (Cypress and Poplar Valley).

In 2010, the People's Government of Jiang'an County designated this residential house as a cultural heritage protection site.
