Mengtun River Valley, Aba
The Mengtun River Valley Scenic Area is located in Shangmeng Township and Xiàméng Township in the northwest of Li County, about 50 kilometers from the county seat and 173 kilometers from Chengdu. It is an area inhabited by the Gyarong Tibetan people. Covering an area of 714.5 square kilometers, the valley has an average elevation of 2,500 meters. With its crisscrossing ravines, numerous alpine lakes, lush vegetation, and well-preserved natural ecology, it produces valuable medicinal herbs such as angelica, notopterygium, cordyceps, and fritillaria. The ancient Mengtun River has nurtured the wise people of Mengtun and created breathtaking natural scenery, making it an excellent destination for hiking and known as the “backpackers’ paradise.” The scenic area is mainly concentrated in the Shangmeng region, except for the Mengtun Ancient Fortress. The residents of the Mengtun River Valley are all Gyarong Tibetans who follow the Red Sect. The 38-kilometer-long, emerald-green Mengtun River nourishes approximately 6,000 Tibetan, Qiang, and Han people. It is home to the Lama Temple closest to Chengdu, Tibetan-style residential complexes, and authentic Tibetan culture.
