The ancient town encompasses the profound historical culture and traditional customs of both Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, forming a uniquely distinctive ancient town in western China that blends Sichuan and Guizhou characteristics. It is a renowned cultural town, film and television base, and Buddhist destination.

Yaoba Ancient Town has a long history and was one of the six ancient fortresses and eight ancient towns in Hejiang County. During the Yuanfeng era (1078–1085) of the Northern Song Dynasty, Hejiang was divided into two townships and six fortresses, with Yaoba Fortress being a key military stronghold — the foremost of the six. In the Jiading era (1208–1224) of the Southern Song Dynasty, Hejiang was divided into one township, seven li, twenty districts, six fortresses, and nineteen market towns; Yaoba was located in the 13th district of Baima Li and called the Yaoba Market. By the seventh year of the Yongzheng reign in the Qing Dynasty, it was organized under Yaoba Branch of Xixiang in western Hejiang. During the Guangxu era (1906), it belonged to Yaoba Township in the Western Fourth District, then was renamed Yaoba Town after the liberation. As early as the Huangyou era of the Northern Song Dynasty, the ancient town served as a post station on the important transportation route between Sichuan and Guizhou. It was the essential route from ancient Jiangyang to the Yelang Kingdom, earning the title "Corridor Between Sichuan and Guizhou." Before the highway between Luzhou and Chishui was built, merchants and officials traveling between southern Sichuan and northern Guizhou all passed through Yaoba to Chishui, making it a necessary stopover. An official Yaoba Post Station was established, attracting various vendors and offering a wide range of goods, which led to a bustling market and gained it widespread fame as the “Little Hong Kong.” Yaoba has also been home to many illustrious individuals.
