Bijia Mountain Scenic Area

Bijia Mountain Scenic Area is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

Bijia Mountain Scenic Area is located in Hejiang County, Luzhou, southern Sichuan, 42 kilometers from Luzhou City and 7 kilometers from Hejiang County. It connects to Chongqing and Chishui City in Guizhou. The scenic area covers 8,400 acres with a forest coverage rate of 68.2%, an average annual temperature of 16.2°C, and rainfall of 1,500 mm. The mountain is characterized by typical red Danxia landform, featuring unique landscapes and stunning scenery.

Bijia Mountain rises abruptly from the flat ground, with steep slopes, towering ancient trees, and with the Yangtze River, Chishui River, and Xishui River flowing around it. When sailing across the Chishui River and looking up at Bijia Mountain, it resembles a penholder with three peaks and two indentations, standing firmly on its own. It has been used by people for over a thousand years. During the Sui Dynasty when Taoism flourished, it was called Ancient Anle Mountain, and the legend of the Heavenly Master Zhang painting divine talisman trees all over the mountain is still passed down today. In the Tang Dynasty, it was renamed Shaomin Mountain, and due to its three towering peaks that resemble a penholder, it was later named Bijia Mountain after the Qing Dynasty.

The naturally formed attractions on Bijia Mountain include 28 sites such as Immortal’s Cave, Immortal’s Mouth, Immortal’s Stone, Nine-Linked Cave, Drying Elixir Stone, and Scripture Reciting Rock, hence it is reputed as a pocket-sized scenic area. Among these, Immortal’s Stone is one of the rock formations visible along the Yangtze River. The Nine-Linked Cave consists of nine interconnected caves with varied and wondrous rock formations inside. Immortal’s Cave is perched precariously, offering cool and refreshing breezes, making it a very pleasant spot. Immortal’s Mouth provides a panoramic view of the mountains at the border between southern Sichuan and northern Guizhou, presenting a magnificent sight, while Drying Elixir Stone offers a bird’s-eye view of the three rivers winding together and the pastoral scenery of southern Sichuan.

The Yuntaitemple on Bijia Mountain was built during the Sui Dynasty, and in front of the mountain gate still stands an ancient camphor tree over 600 years old, which is rare in southern Sichuan. The temple is well-preserved and houses steles inscribed by Huang Tingjian, poems by Marshal - , murals from the Ming Dynasty, and a bronze bell weighing over a thousand jin from the Qing Dynasty.

The Bijia Mountain Stele Forest features inscriptions by -, Zhang Aiping, Lu Dingyi, and a group of renowned calligraphers, engraved on natural rock surfaces, possessing high historical, cultural, and artistic value for visitors to appreciate.

Bijia Mountain has seven humanistic attractions including Flying Immortal Pavilion, Luo Gong Pavilion, Two Rivers Pavilion, and Sunset Pavilion. The Shaomin Resort integrates dining, accommodation, transportation, entertainment, and shopping, providing convenience for tourists. The forest cabins on the mountain offer the best leisure spot to get close to nature.
