Neijiang Great Buddha Temple

The Neijiang Great Buddha Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Neijiang Great Buddha Temple is located on the right side of Guabang Mountain, along the eastern bank of the Tuo River in Dongxing District, Neijiang City. It connects to Daqian City Square and enjoys a beautiful environment nestled against the mountain and beside the water.

The Great Buddha Temple was originally built in the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), covering an area of over 700 square meters. The original complex included thirteen halls, encompassing more than 300 square meters. The architecture featured a brick-and-wood structure with a mixed-frame and thatched roof, and monks resided there year-round, attracting flourishing incense offerings. After the liberation, the government closed the temple and repurposed it as residential housing. Following the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee, the Party’s religious policies were gradually implemented, and in 1996, the temple was approved for reopening by the government.

In accordance with China’s religious policies and the requests of many local worshippers, and with approval from the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Office of Dongxing District, Neijiang City, the temple was rebuilt through fundraising by devotees. After completing all necessary construction procedures, renovation began on June 10, 1998, and was completed on August 10, 2000. The temple now has a construction area of over 1,000 square meters, featuring a five-story-plus-basement reinforced concrete structure with over 60 angles, designed in the style of a traditional Taoist temple. The decorations include cylindrical columns with upturned eaves and flying rafters, wooden carved flower window frames, ridge ornaments, and rooftops adorned with sculptures of dragons and phoenixes. The Buddha statues inside have been remade entirely in gold finish. At first glance, the Great Buddha Temple appears majestic and spectacular, attracting a continuous stream of visitors and worshippers. The nearby Daqian Square has become a central tourism and leisure hub in Neijiang City.
