Introduction to Guangyin Rock Carvings in Deyang The Guangyin Rock Carvings are located in the northern part of Luojiang County. In the 32nd year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty, Magistrate Mian initiated their construction, which was later renovated by Li Diaoyuan in the 57th year of Qianlong. In the winter of 1992, they were rebuilt by Wenxing Town. Li Diaoyuan wrote in "Record of the Reconstruction of the Main Hall at Guangyin Rock": "Guangyin Rock was originally called White Stone Rock... In the autumn of the year Xinyou during Qianlong’s reign, torrential rains fell relentlessly, causing the mountain to collapse and the rocks to split. Thunder roared and lightning struck when suddenly, out of the flash of lightning, the stone statue of Guanyin emerged... That same month, my late father, Shi Tingong, passed the provincial imperial examination... Neighbors nearby all regarded it as a divine occurrence, and thus the rock was named after Guanyin. People from near and far who came to pray found their requests answered, and worshippers flocked in from all over the region." In the 32nd year of Qianlong’s reign, Magistrate Mian inscribed on a spiritual rock: “An ancient Buddha comes from the west, resting in the east; A high monk beyond the clouds recognizes the Snow Mountain.” The calligraphy is simple yet powerful.
