Former Site of the Fifth Anti-Japanese Special Administrative Region

The former site of the “Fifth Anti-Japanese Special Administrative Region” is located in Nanshicao Village at the foot of Tailing Mountain in the urban area. It is a building from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, serving as a provincial-level “Moral Education Base,” a municipal-level “Patriotism Education Base,” and an important “Revolutionary Tradition Education Base” in the main urban area. The Changzhi region, situated at the strategic throat of southeastern Shanxi, has always been a contested military zone. The “Fifth Anti-Japanese Special Administrative Region” was responsible for the governance of 12 counties including Changzhi, Zhangzi, Tunliu, Lucheng, Pingshun, Huguan, Jincheng, Gaoping, Yangcheng, Lingchuan, Qinshui, and Fushan. In 1939, following instructions from the Northern Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, the “Fifth Special Administrative Region” established party and league organizations to lead the anti-Japanese war efforts in its jurisdiction. At that time, Changzhi was not only home to the “Fifth Special Administrative Region,” but also hosted the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army, the Northern Bureau of the CCP Central Committee, the command organs of the 129th Division, and the First Branch of the Counter-Japanese Military and Political University in a village in Tunliu County. It was truly a gathering of notable figures and a convergence of pivotal forces, with wartime Changzhi brimming with a vibrant and spirited atmosphere of resistance and patriotism.

Nanshicao Village: Located in Nanshicao Village, Wuma Subdistrict Office, in the southeastern part of Changzhi City, it borders Tailing Mountain to the east, Beishantou to the south, Tsinghua and Huaihai to the west, and Beishicao to the north, making it part of the urban-rural fringe. The total area of the village is 3,136.6 mu, including approximately 700 mu for the village itself, around 700 mu of arable land, and a current population of about 2,045 people.
