The Site of the Beiguan Battle in the Shangdang Campaign is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism destination.

In the autumn of 1945, after Japan’s surrender, Yan Xishan sent troops to invade Changzhi in an attempt to seize the fruits of the war victory, which triggered the famous Shangdang Campaign. In 1985, to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the victory of the Shangdang Campaign and the liberation of Changzhi, the Changzhi municipal government mobilized government officials and workers for voluntary labor to construct the memorial site of the Beiguan battlefield of the Shangdang Campaign. At the center of the memorial garden stands a rockery inscribed with “Site of the Beiguan Battle in the Shangdang Campaign.” The inscription behind the rockery describes the Shangdang Campaign that took place over half a century ago, reflecting the heroic spirit and fearless sacrifice of the revolutionary predecessors in their fight for the liberation of the Chinese people. In 2002, the gardening department added 2,900 square meters of green space to the southern part of the memorial garden, bringing the total area to 6,594 square meters. The garden features corridors, ponds, pavilions, and a stone carving of Mao Zedong’s calligraphy commemorating the Battle of Sanchenggang.
