Shulong Mountain Bashu Stone City
Shulong Mountain Bashu Stone City is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
Shulong Mountain Bashu Stone City, historically known as "Shelong Mountain - Bashu Stone City," is located in the southern suburbs of Guang’an’s new urban area. It fully reflects the history of Guang’an and eastern Sichuan/northern Chongqing, showcasing the seamless integration of Bashu culture and religion, and dramatizing the timeless tale of war and peace. It stands as a unique historical and cultural heritage site in the world. Covering an area of over 200 hectares and standing 81 meters high, Shulong Mountain Bashu Stone City is the highest point in the urban area and just 1.5 kilometers from the city center. Named for its abrupt and strategic ridge that twists and turns like a soaring dragon, it was once a key stronghold of the ancient Ba Kingdom. The mountain served as a vital passageway between the ancient Ba Kingdom and the Qin-Shu region, extending east toward Jingchu, guarding the south with Tiger Capital, linking west to Shuhan, and overlooking the Three Qins to the north, making it one of the kingdom’s important gateways.
Guang’an, historically known as Congcheng, was the homeland of the Ba people's Ban Dengman clan. Located at the highest point of Congcheng, Shulong Mountain in Hualong Township and Shelong Village in the city’s south, it was historically called "Shelong Mountain." As part of the Daba Mountains range, the Ba people’s Ban Dengman clan revered the snake totem, hence the mountain range was also known as Snake Mountain. Shelong Mountain was regarded as the sacred mountain of the Ba people. The Ba people traditionally revered nature, believed in heaven and earth, honored the heavens, respected the earth, and complied with fate. A folk rhyme says: “All things are born of heaven’s will; all deeds arise from human intent; follow heaven’s will and human mind; align with human desire to fulfill your own.” This saying has been passed on through generations since ancient times. Dominating the strategic passes from north to south and the throat of routes from east to west, Shulong Mountain was easily defensible and hard to attack. Its perilous terrain and auspicious feng shui made it the primary gateway to the Ba Kingdom and a constant battleground for military strategists throughout history. Its core components — the thousand-year-old ancient fortress Niefeng Fortress and Longze Temple — were once a military stronghold left by the ancient Ba Kingdom. The fortress consists of three parts: Longmen Pass, Tu Zhou Lake, and Longtai. Its cultural history is made up of three major elements: Bashu culture, Longze Temple religious culture, and 28 Constellations celestial culture. The original construction date is unknown, and due to the long passage of time and frequent warfare, the original fortress had long been in ruins. The current Niefeng Fortress was restored on the original site based on the surviving remnants of the ancient Ba Kingdom.
