Located in the areas of Louzeyu, Shibei, and Zhangcun, about 15 kilometers north of Wuxiang County, the fossil site contains vertebrate fossils primarily from the Anshunsaurus-dominated fauna of the Middle Triassic (which began around 230 million years ago). Additionally, the entire Wuxiang County area features mammalian fossils from the Neogene period, mainly consisting of Hipparion fauna, which enjoys international renown. The Hipparion, a branch in the evolutionary lineage of horses, was smaller than modern horses and had three toes on each foot; it is now extinct. The Louzeyu site is now a provincially designated protected area for ancient vertebrate fossils.
