Buddha Head Mountain Forest Park

Buddha Head Mountain Forest Park is located to the north of Jiangkou Town, the seat of Pingchang County. It is surrounded on three sides by the Tonghe, Bahe, and Longtan rivers, and embraced by numerous peaks, resembling a cluster of stars encircling the moon. The mountain is named after the legend that “Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, sent the Buddha Head Boy down to guard the Longtan Creek.” The scenic area covers an operating area of 293 hectares and has an elevation ranging from 400 to 723 meters, with a forest coverage rate of 90%. In 2002, the Sichuan Provincial Tourism Bureau approved it as an A-level scenic spot, and in 2003, it was designated as a national forest park as part of the Zhenglongshan National Forest Park.

The climate in the Buddha Head Mountain area is mild, the scenery is enchanting, the peaks are majestic, the sea of clouds shrouds the mountains, the Buddha’s halo occasionally appears, the two rivers converge, the surging waves resemble white silk—all presenting breathtakingly magnificent and pristine views. The dramatic elevation difference, steep slopes, narrow mountain paths, sheer cliffs, ridges with hidden trails, caves where fairies are said to gather on cliffs, V-shaped valleys carved like masterpieces, rocks suspended in midair, bamboo shoots thrusting through forests, flat stones faintly bearing traces of mills, and sloping rock mounds deeply imprinted with footprints... Water seeps from rock crevices, streams trickle along the mountain skirt, the Longtan Waterfall splashes like flying pearls and jade, and the rocks thunder. The large and small Tianchi (Heavenly Pools) are naturally exquisite, with crystal-clear and sweet water. Chrysanthemums and osmanthus scent the air, azalea blossoms are snowy white, and maple leaves crimson—offering a scene too entrancing to leave. Ascending the mountain ridge, one overlooks rosy clouds resting upon the sky, and looking back from the distant hills, the dragon's claws appear to stretch outward. Gazing afar brings a sudden sense of openness and clarity. Amidst the climb, amid exclamations of amazement, you may hear the whisper of pines in nature’s music, bathe in the ethereal air of the forest, witness the otherworldly presence of the Buddha’s halo, take in the splendor of the Ten Scenic Views of Jiangyang, listen to birds chirping melodiously, distant chants echoing faintly, admire pavilions, towers, frescoes and stone carvings, historical relics, revolutionary sites—all of which are exquisitely beautiful. The site is rich and unique in religious culture, Red Army culture, and folk culture, radiant and dazzling... It makes for an ideal destination for rest, sightseeing, summer retreat, convalescence, hiking, pilgrimage, and engaging in patriotic education and social practice activities.

The Buddha’s Halo at Buddha Head Mountain is a marvel under heaven. Due to the extremely rare conditions required for its formation, it is also known as the “Treasure Light.” It is said that “if your shadow appears within the Buddha’s halo, you will be blessed with good fortune.” The more famous “Buddha’s Halos” in China are found on Mount Emei in Sichuan and Mount Huangshan in Anhui. In the world, the phenomenon is regularly visible on Germany’s Brocken Mountain and Switzerland’s Rigi Mountain. However, the appearance of the Buddha’s halo at such a low altitude—just 700 meters—is a phenomenon unique to Pingchang’s Buddha Head Mountain. When mist envelops the mountainside and sunlight filters obliquely on the cliffs, a colorful ring appears. Trees and flowers within the range become reflections within the halo, moving with you—when two people embrace, only their own image can be seen. It is utterly magical and deeply moving. The Buddha's halo at Buddha Head Mountain features a clear ring, lasts for extended periods, appears frequently—at times over ten times within a single month—making it all the more extraordinary and mysterious.
