Pingchang County Martyrs' Memorial Park

Pingchang County Martyrs' Memorial Park is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

Pingchang County Martyrs' Memorial Park is located on Miaoliang Mountain at Sishifeng Temple in Pingchang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province, about 40 kilometers from the county seat.

In the winter of 1932, the Fourth Red Army entered Pingchang County and fought its first successful battle against Sichuan warlord forces at Sishifeng. The site of the memorial park, Miaoliang Mountain at Sishifeng Temple, was one of the key battlegrounds. In October 1933, Commander-in-Chief Xu Xiangqian presided over a meeting of senior military officers at Beishansi Temple in Desheng Town, Pingchang County, where he planned and directed the famous “Xuanda Campaign.” This campaign led to the height of the revolutionary base in Sichuan-Shaanxi, making it the second-largest territory of the Chinese Soviet Republic. At that time, 30,000 locals from Pingchang joined the Red Army, and more than 5,000 sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. To protect scattered memorials for martyrs, honor the spirits of revolutionary heroes, and promote the tradition of patriotism, the Pingchang County Committee of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Government of Pingchang County decided to build the Pingchang County Martyrs' Memorial Park.

The memorial park was initially constructed in May 2013 and completed in December 2015. Covering an area of 76.15 acres, it includes the Pingchang Martyrs' Monument of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area, the Pingchang Revolutionary Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area, a complex of martyrs’ tombs, and memorial pavilions. The monument stands 19.49 meters tall, symbolizing a solemn and respectful tribute. The exhibition hall spans 400 square meters and consists of a “Prelude Hall” and five themed exhibition areas: “The Flames of Revolution,” “Defending the Soviet Area,” “Heroic Epics,” “Deep Bonds Between Soldiers and Civilians,” and “Eternal Spirit.” It outlines the revolutionary struggle of the time, showcases the experiences of revolutionary martyrs, historical photos, and over 130 precious relics, vividly illustrating the truths that “Without the Communist Party, there would be no New China” and “Only socialism can save China.” The martyrs’ tomb complex is the resting place of 2,366 Pingchang natives who gave their lives in the revolutionary fight.

The memorial park integrates commemorative, cultural, social, educational, and scenic functions. It serves as a key venue for revolutionary tradition education, patriotism education, national defense education, integrity education, and the promotion of core socialist values, as well as a classic red tourism destination. It has been designated as a Sichuan Provincial CPC History Education Base, a Key Protected Unit of Revolutionary Martyrs’ Buildings in Sichuan Province, a Bazhong Municipal Patriotic Education Base, and a Pingchang County Red Culture Demonstration Base.
