Over forty years of selective breeding have produced a new breed of meat-producing goats, which is now the highest-performing meat goat breed in China. Senior animal husbandry scientists once lived in this cave for over a decade, observing and understanding the growth of the goats and selecting the best breeds for cultivation. Through more than thirty years of arduous work and using a multi-breed hybridization approach, they developed China’s first new breed of meat goat — the Nanjiang Yellow Goat. This scientific achievement won the Sichuan Provincial Government’s Science and Technology Progress First Prize in 1996, the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize in 1997, and was officially certified and named by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1998. The Nanjiang Yellow Goat has gained nationwide recognition as the highest-performing meat goat breed in China, known for its tender meat and excellent taste. It was the first variety of lamb to be served at state banquets in Zhongnanhai. Today, the yellow goat industry has become a major source of economic prosperity for farmers in the mountainous regions of Nanjiang.
