Zhanggong Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Zhanggong Temple is located at the southern foot of Chengzi Village in Heping Township, not far from the Micang Ancient Road. It carries on the legacy of Damou, surrounded by verdant peaks and picturesque scenery. Historical records indicate that the temple was first built during the Tang and Song dynasties, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and covered nearly 100 acres of land. With three courtyards of halls and dozens of old rooms and sheds, the temple was grand and majestic, renowned far and wide. Within a radius of about a hundred li, pilgrims came in an endless stream, making it a true local landmark. Today, place names such as Jiudianya (Hotel Ridge) and Shuanmaping (Horse-Tying Flat) still remain, offering a glimpse into the temple’s former glory. Sadly, the once-magnificent temple has been lost to the ravages of time and fire, with none of its former structures remaining. However, six ancient cypress trees still stand in front of the hall (one of which is called the Brotherhood Tree, with one trunk splitting into three branches—its form said to symbolize the deep brotherly bond between Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, resembling the incense stick lit during their oath of allegiance). Each tree trunk is several feet in diameter, rising majestically towards the sky. Legend has it that they were planted by the valiant general Zhang Fei when he passed through this area on his way from Hanzhong to Sichuan. Later generations, moved by General Zhang’s loyalty and filial piety, built the temple to enshrine him. During the Republic of China era, the temple was once used as a schoolhouse, marking the beginning of modern education in our region. For decades, it nurtured many talented individuals and gained widespread fame. In recent years, local villagers, in reverence of his spirit’s protection, have adorned his statue with red ornaments and continue to offer incense, ensuring that the worship has never ceased.
